This comic strip was in the paper last week and it reminded me of how I used to eat when I was a child and not as nutritionally smart as I am now. I know I used to want all of the sugary cereals shown on Saturday morning TV, and I remember eating a lot of them as snacks. I was like Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes who ate his Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs every morning. Knowing what I know how, I am shocked by how little nutrition you can get with those empty carbs.
This comic strip also summarizes perfectly the situation with our food supply. Eating too much processed food leads to the consumption of too much sugar, as noted in the recent movie Fed Up and in the consumption of too much CRAP. This has led to an increase in the obesity epidemic in the country and a reduction of our overall health.
Many of our health problems started when we staring getting food in a box. In many cases, you can get more nutrients from the cardboard box they come in. There is a reason why you should shop the periphery of a supermarket, not the center aisles, because I can assure you that we don’t have a cardboard deficiency in this country!
Bottom line – learn how to read food labels and be aware of what you are putting in your body. You can improve your overall health by doing this. Please contact me if you have any questions.
